New Year's Eve 2011 marked my 4th anniversary blogging. This will be the first time since 2008 that I've left my blog untended for a long time, 9 days in this case. Tomorrow we're headed off for a much needed vacation to St. John USVI, our absolutely favorite place to go to relax. I pack light and don't even bring a suitcase. Needless to say there won't be a laptop or a smart phone or anything that connects to the internet packed among my t-shirts and shorts.

2012 DC Design House: Dan Proctor of Kirk Designs

The recent announcement of the designers for the 2012 DC Design House has peaked my interest in finding out more about those whose work I wasn't acquainted with yet. First up is Dan Proctor of Kirk Designs, a Baltimore firm with 20+ years experience in creating beautiful interiors. These are just a few of the sophisticated and elegant spaces that caught my attention. (all images from the website of Kirk Designs, photographer not known.)
The blue and white ginger jars and the contemporary portrait are an unexpected and perfect pairing.
That glossy orange- red coffee table with all those curves is to die-for, love it!
A simple but incredibly restful and beautiful bedroom.
I covet those mesh metal columns. Very much looking forward to seeing their transformed room for the Design House. To see more of Kirk Designs portfolio, go here.

DIY-AF: Framing Projects

Back in 1994, I remember being so excited to have these magnolia prints framed but now their reddish cherry stain didn't seem to work anywhere in my house or with my plans to replace the flowers with prints from the West Indies.

Inspired by Janell of Isabella and Max's use of Smart Strip I slathered up the frames and scraped off all the reddish finish. This stuff is really great! Then I used a walnut stain to get it to the color I was looking for.

Another project hanging over my head with this frame which had a long-ago discarded print in it. A card and a cover sheet torn from a book was combined with a Clarence House remnant that I've had since the mid-90's. Two notes on that: it feels great to finally do something with that and horsehair is sharp!

Here it is in my bedroom, my side.
Another remnant (still have 1 left) was used with a print from a book to hang on my husband's side. As you can see, there's still one more framing project to go. Fingers crossed that doesn't take years.

I'm very excited to share the news that I will be writing a weekly post for Washingtonian Magazine's Open House Blog, providing coverage of beautiful homes as well as inspiring ideas and helpful tips from the design community. My first post, Design Scout: Inexpensive Accent Furniture, went up yesterday and I have to admit that even though I've been writing My Notting Hill for 4 years, it was quite exciting to see my post on Washingtonian's site. I Spy

I came across this image on Gretchen Opgenorth's blog where she profiled a 1970's book titled, "All About Decorating." And there, on those brown walls, were my sconces right down to the curved wire scrolling at the top! Small world. Those ones appear to have candles which makes me wonder if a previous owner of my sconces had them electrified.

Using Outdoor Lights Inside?

If I hadn't already found the sconces for my bathroom renovation, I would definitely consider these. Love the styling. (Double Box Chrome Light, recently carried by Lamps Plus but now I can't find them)
This outdoor flush mount Vaxcel Robie light is on it's way to my house now where it may end up as a hall light after adding a bit of gold rub n-buff. Have you ever used outdoor lights inside ?

Beadboard Sheets Become Chevron Paneling

Designer Janelle Steinberg of the blog Maison Classique transformed a plain, builder-grade powder room by designing an innovative use of beadboard paneling. Placed on an angle to create a chevron pattern, it changes the entire look of the space. Makes you think about beadboard paneling in a whole new way. Love it!!!
In progress - vertical stiles provide a finished look to the seams of the chevron pattern.

Some designers say they don't have a signature look but often they do. In this case, designer Michelle Nussbaumer proved the opposite and created a design, not with her signature look, but one that reflects the homeowners beautifully. When this story was published in Jan/Feb 2006, homeowner and then DHome Editor Christine Allison penned the story herself and captured it best with these remarks, "Thus, on the face of it, it might have seemed incongruous, even daft, that we would have turned for guidance to Michelle Nussbaumer...Nussbaumer is as theatrical as we are not...But the truth was, we were due for a little glamour. And Nussbaumer figured us out in our first meeting."

This home is one of my all time favorites. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Dining Library: One of the Best

This is one of the most beautiful dining libraries I've ever seen. I love the contrast of light and dark, formality and informality and the scale of the space. Pretty much perfection. This image comes from an incredible blog called Beautiful Libraries with a very accurate tagline, The Most Beautiful Libraries in the World. The blog mentions this library is in Mel Gibson's Connecticut mansion which was for sale back in 2009. If you love libraries, this blog will be a joy to visit.

I'm thankful to have woken up this morning to a voice mail from my husband that he got to his hotel near Utica NY at 3:30 am after driving through some serious ice and snow that started in Binghampton. DIY-AF: My Small Mirror Project

I purchased this mirror at a yard sale a while back. Although I liked the shape, it looked like a mass-produced piece from the 60's and the gold was definitely skewing cheap amd gaudy. It stayed temporarily in my dining room until I found a new location for it in a corner of my living room, where it opened up and brightened a corner.
I painted out part of the mirror with a sample can of Farrow & Ball Pavilion Gray, sanding off some of the finish on the appliques. It's so nice to AF (and finish!) my small DIY project. Next project - get the right sized harp for that lamp...

Couldn't Take My Eyes Off...

When I first saw this room of the late Mimi Weddell I couldn't take my eyes off of it. You could make the argument this it is both living with, and decorating with, books. And, her eye for color is amazing. (image from Casa Vogue 2005, photography by Tim Walker via Identical Eye here.)
It reminded me that I received a wonderful book for Christmas, Decorating with Books. While the rooms featured aren't as riotous as Mimi's, they're inspiring and interesting and, more importantly, most were images I hadn't seen.

Thank you to Matchbook Magazine for including me in their January 2012 issue with my thoughts on the one beauty product I can't live without, pg. 41. (I almost chose an anti-wrinkle cream but refrained.) The January issue is their 12th as they head towards their one year anniversary in February. The host site for the 2012 DC Design House was announced yesterday and it's a stately Colonial located at 4951 Rockwood Parkway NW in Spring Valley. You can view the current listing here. This looks like it's going to be a great one! (Thank you Mathew for giving me the heads up!)

Jura Koncius of The Washington Post tweeted that the Bare Bones tour is scheduled for Feb 25th. I'm sorry to miss it although my consolation is that I'm going to be in St. John Virgin Islands. It's been really cold here today...

Dec 24, 2011 - (Senior Year) The letter he's been waiting for arrived. YES, he'd been accepted to his #1 choice, Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, to study for a BFA in Film. And, he was given a merit scholarship based solely on his own accomplishments. We are so happy for him!!

- The wizard doesn't have a face.

- Ryan is still an artist.

Crisp & Colorful

Last week I finished reading Asa Larsson's most recent novel translated into English, which then got me searching around the internet for some of the Swedish cultural references in the book. This led to finding designer Marie Olsson Nylander's home, originally featured in the Swedish magazine Residence. It turns out this creative, colorful home was covered by numerous blogs last January but I'm only just finding it now. Wish I knew the name of the photographer - isn't this first image with the edge of the green pot in the foreground genius?

I think interior design in 2012 is going to feature alot more color. What do you think?

Goodbye Sweet 2011

I've practically been in pjs for the last 6 days. Today was the first day I drove a car since the 24th. The end of 2011 has been a sweet bubble.

2012 will be full of surprises yet-to-be.

But just like treasured vintage ornaments, 2011 will be held onto, if in memory only.

But until then, 6 more sweet 2011 hours are still to come.

Can you imagine waking up in the morning to this stately second floor balustrade overlooking the foyer and then making your way down to breakfast? This isn't just a home, it's an experience.

Paloma of La Dolce Vita posted a nice image of Barry Dixon's library with DC artist John Mathew Moore's much admired sheep portrait in sepia tones. Although I love it in it's full color (my good friend just placed one over her family room mantel), the sepia version is perfect in this room of warm neutrals. Holiday Coverage: Mags that Do, Don't and Did

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle gorgeous December issue celebrating holiday decor only made this year's slim coverage from some of the major national shelter magazines even more noticeable. It had me wondering, when did I last see an issue from House Beautiful, Veranda or Elle Decor that spotlighted decor for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year's Eve, instead of just giving an obligatory nod? I know budgets are tight but that didn't stop magazines such as Traditional Home, Country Living, Coastal Living or Canada's Style at Home and House & Home from giving readers Holiday eye candy and inspiration.

House Beautiful's December 2008 issue seems to be most recent one that gives obvious cover page acknowledgment to the Season. My first look at these bells had me thinking about ringing in the New Year, then Christmas decor. (I know I'm equating the cover image* with coverage of the holidays but from my subjective point of view it seems to correlate. Plus I couldn't fact check w/some of mags still buried in the attic during our reno. Although later on in this post I realize there may be some exceptions.)
The 2005 cover was all about Christmas while the 1997 issue played on wintery imagery and gave more balanced cover attention to the holidays of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas.

Here's Veranda December 2011 issue. The only cover reference to the holidays is a Gift Guide. Coverage inside was limited as well.
Veranda's Nov/Dec 2008 cover barely hints at holiday celebrations but then delivers huge with a number of features, including Mary McDonald's stunning home dressed in greenery and peacock feathers.

Verandas Nov/Dec 2005 seems to be the most recent issue that promotes seasonal coverage on the cover with a full-out blue and white Christmas tree.
In all fairness, it seems that Elle Decor has had a more consistent, low-key approach to the holidays throughout most of its publication.

The 1998 cover is my favorite. There's not a decoration in site but it still conjurs up relaxing time at home - the lull before the New Year starts.
Southern Accent's last Holiday issue was Nov/Dec 2008, as the magazine closed with the Sep/Oct 2009 issue. You could always count on Southern Accents to go all out with inspiring homes at this time of year.
These beautiful rooms by Houston designer Pamela Pierce, that appeared in the December 2003 issue, give a sense of the type of holiday coverage we're missing. (Pics are from the blog Antiqueholics - scroll down in her archive to see more images from this beautiful home.)
And who could forget this brilliant cover of Aerin Lauder Zinterhofer gracing the cover of the last issue of House & Garden December 2007?

When it comes to Holiday issues my all time favorite is Canadian House and Home. I have all the issues from 2001 (one is currently missing somewhere...) and they're my go-to source every November. In the November 2007 issue, then editor Cobi Ladner shared what might be the secret behind their amazing coverage: "...a number of years ago we decided we had to bite the bullet and start shooting Christmas stories a full year in advance...In the end, it doesn't really matter when the pictures were taken. Looking at this thick new isssue filled with ideas and homes decked for the holidays proves to me once again how many wonderful ways there are to celebrate the season."

And, if I can borrow some more words from my all-time favorite editor Cobi Ladner, "Although we do all celebrate in different ways at this time of year, what a wonderful communal message we share: Good will to all. It's pretty hard to go wrong with that."

New Old Sconces for my Dining Room

A while back I bought 4 vintage sconces for $40 a piece from Plaire, a terrific esty seller. Two have been hard wired for our bathroom reno and these two (with new cords) are now adding some much needed accent lighting in my dining/library room. Originally I thought of hanging them but now I like them just on the mantel.
A little bit of brasso and windex did the job (or enough before it got too tiring to keep polishing!)

Jill Sharp Brinson's Home for the Holidays

You probably remember Jill Brinson's home from the Dec 2009 cover of House Beautiful or the great post Joni of Cote de Texas wrote breaking down the style elements. Well Altlanta Homes & Lifestyles in now featuring her home decked out for Christmas and it's a real treat.

This tear sheet is a little worse for the wear but the beauty of this simple and elegant dining room still shows through. Great symmetry with the urns and round platters on the stands but I'm also noticing how easy it would be to find thrift-store chairs similar to these and paint them.

Georgetown Wreath Inspiration

December 2009 I took pics of some of the decorations in Georgetown and proceeded to misplace them on my hard drive for 2 years. They've been found!
This simple, wide chartreuse ribbon accents a classic boxwood wreath. Magnolia leaves accent the evergreen swag.
Love the gesture of this diminutive wreath balancing the brass knocker on the other door, and wow, those door knobs!
Two matching swags are perfect for this double door. Adore the X motif in the window.

Long blue ribbons and matching bulbs are elegant and pretty.

Our tree Christmas Eve 2009. The only thing pictured here, that is still in this room, is the seagrass rug. My favorite part; the tinfoil star my husband and I made for our first Christmas together in 1986. It's a bit small in scale as our apartment tree was only 3 ft high then.

New series - From the Stacks: We'll be taking down the Christmas decorations from our crawl space attic after my daughter's birthday party this coming Saturday. I'm very excited as right now they're blocking a whole box of older magazines. Luckily I could reach this issue of British Homes & Gardens, Oct 2003, featuring Jasper Conran's London flat. The story title read, "A Modern Classic." I wholeheartedly agree. (Design by Ann Boyd, photography by Andreas Von Einsiedel)

Uh Oh! my kitchen reno

This was the state of my kitchen this past Saturday - a mere 5 days before 25 people would be coming for Thanksgiving! (*guests - if you're reading this it's all ok now)
Where the ladder is is where the stairs to the basement used to be. Now instead of an L shape, the kitchen is a much larger, squared off space with a round kitchen table in the center. It's not complete in terms of finishes, new counters etc but it has a nice feel to it - something along the lines of The Walton's kitchen. And, most importantly, it's ready to cook 2 turkeys!

Canadian designer Sloan Mauran's renovation of her 1891 Queen Anne style Toronto house is a standout. First featured in Canadian House and Home back in Feb of 2006, Sloan was ahead of the curve with her use of warm brass accents throughout the house, including the kitchen drawer handles. High Point: Drexel Heritage, Thomasville & Lane Venture

Although I've already posted about some highlights from High Point, there are a few more things to share. The upholstered furniture at Drexel Heritage was really fun and it extended to combinations with wood as in the mirror above.

Thomasville has a wonderful industrial inspired line called Reinventions and their inspiration is authentic as they turned to their own vintage factory pieces. The Shop Floor Chest is directly inspired by a chest that held tools early in their history. My picture doesn't quite show it but the handles are marked with their name.
Loved the Apprenctice Adjustable Activity Table.

Lane Venture had one of the smartest and practical features on some of their outdoor pieces - a ledge for additional seating! I tested it out and it's perfectly comfortable and balanced. Could definitely imagine how handy this would be during a party or with a large gathering of kids by the pool.
The other standout was how much the slipcovered outdoor pieces looked as if they were intended for interiors. My favorite was the english roll arm sofa. This look would allow you to use these pieces in a family or rec room instead of traditional furnishings.

My Reno: Getting X Stair Rails

What do you think of my current stair rail?? Luckily I don't have small children and this barrier of furniture and random piles of wood and plastic has prevented anyone from falling over. *(The blue tape shows where a new window will go. The new lower level windows and doors are in.)
Monday the stair rail fabricator is coming to measure for the X stair rails - which will be very similar to these. After months of indecision I've decided to go with this design and have a solution planned so they will pass code. For inspiration: (1) the above gorgeous stairs and entry by Canadian designer Scott Yetman. The image is via the blog Home Bunch - go here to see his whole house.

These bright pink covers are from the beautifully styled Hable Construction section of Hickory Chair's High Point showroom. They're now carrying a new line of Hable's fabrics. If you're judging a book by its cover, these are fab.

High Point: Layered Coffee Tables

You expect nesting side tables but at High Point I noticed layered coffee tables. These are from Dwell Studio. They offer visual interest with their varied height and extra surface area for both a tablescape and empty space for setting down wine glasses or plates - who doesn't need that during a party! (That's Christian of Maison 21 and Ashlina of the The Decorista reflected in the mirror. It was great fun to meet them.)
If you look closely you'll notice there are 3 tables (above).
These clean lined layered tables are from Drexel Heritage.

Although I didn't see these layered tables at the Oly Studio High Point showroom, they are featured in an ad in this month's Elle Decor.

I like the idea of layered coffee/cocktail tables - do you?

High Point: Color is King!

Color is king at High Point! It seems that at every turn, happier, brighter and glossier interiors ruled the day. Orange, pink and turquoise took center stage and while neutrals and rough textures are still to be found, they seem to be playing a supporting role to their cheerful counterparts. Maybe in this prolonged economic malaise, the design world is bringing us a much needed antidote! (above room from Hickory Chair)
Drexel Heritage, known for their vast range of custom options in finishes and fabrics, offered color in a wide range of styles; from an elegant, classic look (Laurie Chair) with a Moroccan flavor to a more traditional European feel in the Christelle settee below.
Love everything about this room!

I'll be posting more later about Drexel and their amazing collection of upholstered case goods, like the one above.
At Thomasville, traditional furnishings have taken on a more relaxed, fresh vibe. One of my favorite pieces was the Monaco chair with accompanying curved shaped ottoman. Love the scale and I can attest that it's super comfortable.

Thomasville has expanded their accessories line with some wonderful options; more on that in a later post, as well as their authentic take on the industrial look.
This was my favorite fabric from all of High Point - an outdoor fabric called Lovebirds Sorbet . It was clear that Lane Venture, a firm that focuses on outdoor furniture and indoor wicker, was all about blurring the line between indoors and out.

Vibrant color options from their outdoor slipcover collection. (More on that later too. There's just so much to post about from High Point!)
Even prints you would typically see in sepia tones are now donned in bright colors. These are from Lillian August.

As I was wrapping up this post, I came across this room from DC Designer Heather Safferstone and think it really captures the trends from High Point:

- embracing happy, strong color

- glossy surfaces (mirrored tables, lamps) and

- rough textures and neutrals in a supporting role (driftwood lamp, raffia covered side table, rug)

Came across this room by Nicky Haslam on a recent visit to Jentrified. Love the whole room and the choice the photographer made in showing just a bit of the door, as if you were walking in.

This coming weekend I'm very excited to be joining a group of bloggers on a sponsored trip to High Point. Can't wait to visit the showrooms they've lined up, along with take in the whole experience. I've read that comfortable shoes are a must. Any other advice you'd give?

My New Old Bathroom Sconces & Great Etsy Seller!

For our lower level bathroom remodel, I purchased these 4 vintage electric sconces for $40 a piece from Plaire, a terrific esty seller (more on that in a bit.) 2 will be rewired for use in the bathroom and the other 2 will be in used in the dining room. They're brass with antiqued mirror at the back.

Unfortunately, in the shipping the antiqued mirror broke on one of the sconces. So unless I can find a close approximation, I will replace the antiqued mirror with plain mirror on both of the ones for the bathroom and remove the curved wire to give it a more modern look. The brass will be cleaned and polished and the sconces mounted on the New Ravenna Wave Glass that will surround the mirror above the sink vanity. I also plan to use the tile as a feature above the freestanding tub.
The brass faucet was a $75 vintage find on etsy and the $10 towel bar was found in a clearance bin in a local plumbing supply store. Wish I knew who the manufacturer is!

Back to the great etsy seller Plaire; I was so impressed with how she handled the damaged sconce, exceeding my expectations. Definitely take the time to visit her store where you'll find great stuff like this:

On my second trip to the fab store Blueprint in Dallas, I came across this narrow ceramic trough filled with flowers. Really love how it fills the space of this bureau; could see this as a great centerpiece for a dining table. Putting this into my idea file for Thanksgiving.

I came across image first and had a feeling the rest of the house would be as wonderful. The home is the perfect blend of designer touches and real livability; beauty and function perfectly matched. It's obvious the shelves above aren't styled but in this case, don't you find that's better? My Friend's Lovely Luncheon

Lauren of Pure Style Home and I had the most wonderful luncheon out on our designer friend Anne's beautiful screened porch. The table setting was charming and perfect for a September day. Isn't it great when dear friends also love design and pretty tables! Notice how Anne used 5 mugs for the centerpiece, 3 filled with flowers and 2 left empty. I've made a note of this idea to copy someday.
I couldn't not mention what was served. Grilled salmon on a bed of greens with new potatoes and a champagne dressing. Delicious.
I featured Anne's porch before here. There have been some lovely new accessories added that I wanted to show you.

Over the years there have been some great examples of drawing in architecture with sharpie pens. Many of those were more of a free hand approach. Seeing these amazing doors makes me appreciate the straight line, literal approach that transforms these doors into a building facade. Oh, and I love those lion pulls! Snuggle Up - D. Bryant Archie Textiles

There's a definitely chill in the air here; time to get under the covers. One of my favorite people in the design world, Bryant Archie of D. Bryant Archie Textiles, has added two new patterns to her gorgeous collection of warm, soft handwoven baby alpaca wool blankets and pillows.
The RIAD is inspired by the inner courtyards of the hidden riads of Africa and the Middle East.
"Plaster and stone walls and terraces, terracotta pots, inlaid mother of pearl...light and darkness...aged, tattered." I love this color palette - a perfect pairing for a Fall day.

"The Usonian is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian philosophy of simple, efficient home design...common interior elements--leather, wood, tile, metal." My favorite part is the curvy pattern detailing. Blankets are 59 x 79 and pillows are 22 x 22.
Although there's crisp, autumn air here in DC, I'm a bit happy I'm headed to Dallas where it's still 90 - especially since the hotel I will be at has a roof top infinity pool. This trip marks the last one this summer which was comprised of 8 cities in 12 weeks. Whew. The airport part I won't miss.

My Review - Ballard Designs Sonoma Bookcase

Our family room was in desperate need of a change in scale in the furnishings, as well as storage, so when I came across Ballard Designs Sonoma Bookcase on sale for $349 I decided to take a chance. Bottom line - I'm really happy with it. Since it's 7 ft tall and 42 inches wide, it has a nice presence in the room. (*the butcher block countertop overhang is going to be removed in the kitchen renovation.) In particular I like:
- the quality of the wood finish
- the X detail.
- 4 movable shelves. I decided to place mine unevenly so the X would show
- fairly easy to put together
- quite sturdy, although since it's 42" wide I wouldn't put a whole row of encylopedias across it
- shipped very quickly and the charge was only $21 dollars or so
- great value for $349

Here it is currenlty, although I'm sure when I get home from Seattle I'll tweek this a bit.

Our Bath Remodel -Change in Color Scheme

I fell in love with this tile from New Ravenna ( Waves Glass ) and it's prompted me to completely rethink the colors of our lower level bathroom remodel. This tile is going to be on a feature wall behind a freestanding tub. It's going to be a chunk of change but I've decided to splurge a bit, something I rarely do. Sorry not to post the original plans but I'm on business travel this week with my iPad and short on time.

What I Bought, Found and Won this Summer

BOUGHT - Instead of "What I did this summer," I'm going with theme of what I bought, found and won. The fat little EGW & S 1920's tea pot with wicker handle was purchased in Marblehead for $38; turns out my husband's initials are engraved on the other side. I love how it looks next to my all-time favorite tea pot with lucite handles.
This Rum Carioca jug converted into a lamp was also $38, found in a Falls Church consignment shop. The book underneath it, Sleeping Spaces, was $10.
I've included this zig zag scarf ($18) and stone necklace ($65) because they were purchased in home design stores while in Atlanta, Acquisitions and Scout for the Home, which has a wonderful selection of jewelry. The vintage Dooney & Bourke purse ($64) has absolutely no connection to interior design but I bought it in a Beacon Hill consignment store and really, really like it!

FOUND - I found what I thought was the biggest piece of sea glass ever on a Marblehead beach back in July. I could barely contain myself and carefully placed it in my purse for the plane trip home. After weeks of hearing me remark on its size and how cool the "barnacles" were on it, my family had to break the news to me. It was a weathered piece of plastic w/some permanent glue stuff on it. Maybe not sea glass...but it's still pretty.

The feather was found right after I dropped off my son for 3 weeks of art camp. Many years ago I had made a collage with my son in mind and it included a blue feather just like this. I took it as a very good sign.

WON - These two wonderful, sculptural bee skeps from a recent Under Spanish Moss giveaway. It was a very generous giveaway and I was beyond thrilled to be the recipient of them. Here they are next to a chair in our family room. In addition to writing their blog, Renee and Angela have a wonderful online store, LaCaze, with unique lighting, architectural and garden elements, ironwork and home furnishings and accessories.
Still so sorry to see Summer slip away but at least I have these goodies and all the memories that came with them.

Dallas' Blueprint - Fantastic!

My visit last week to Dallas' Blueprint was a treat I had been looking forward to and it exceeded all my expectations. Set in an interesting house from the 1920's, the beautiful furniture, accessories and abstract art are the perfect foil to the grand and charming architectural details. It felt as if you were visiting the home of a very chic designer but, instead of just having to be envious, you could buy it and bring it home for yourself.

A hallmark of this store is their amazing collection of abstract art.

Loved these two vintage Danish modern chairs.

Just a bit of the interesting architectural detailing.

Looking down the stairwell from the second floor. The cross arrow ironwork includes a fab lion head.

In addition to a fabulous setting and collection of furniture, the store is run by the nicest staff of designers. After asking which direction to walk the few blocks to the Ritz Carlton where I was staying, one of the designers offered to drive me back to avoid the 105 degree heat! Looking forward to visiting again when I'm back in the big D in September.

Last week while visiting Seattle's Great Jones Home, I noticed these great tete-a-tete pieces. So interesting - have you ever used one in your home?

In keeping with the diagonal theme, Barry Dixon has these two chairs at angles - creating an unexpected look and opportunities for multiple conversation areas.

Stefan of Architect Design recently showcased the Hampton Show House room designed by Donald Schermerhon, where he noted the diagonal placement of the furniture aided the traffic flow.

Re: THE EARTHQUAKE in DC, of all places - I never would have guessed that I would be in Dallas, my husband in NY, and my teenage kids home by themselves when a 5.8 earthquake hit. They called me from the street in front of the house, surrounded by neighbors, clearly a bit shaken. Bookcases fell over and pictures fell from the walls but my kids were safe and sound. And, that's the only thing that matters.

Seattle's Great Jones Home

The last time I went to Great Jones Home in Aug 2010 I titled the post, If Elle Decor Was a Store. This store does not disappoint - lot's of juicy colors, lush textures and a great mix of pieces. My favorite was the tapestry upholstered stools below. Love these!

Last week the weather in Seattle was sunny and a beautiful 70 degrees. Off to Dallas tonight where it's supposed to be 105 - yikes!

Too late for this one! I'm on the hunt for a table that can be used for a bathroom sink vanity. This was near perfect but not quite as wide as I'd like. If I had a car, as opposed to a plane ticket, I probably would have bought it though and found some other use for it.

What did I get? A large piece of coral shaped like a bowl. Here I've filled it with shells & I don't like how it looks! Thoughts - leave it empty...

Charleston Eye Candy & La Caze Giveaway!

I was really struck by the color combinations in this Charleston dining room. You could imagine a few more layers added to this room but I think it looks quite special and unique. Love the ornate white mirror, the color of the cabinet backdrop and, of course, those pink chairs. Any thoughts on what that cabinet color is?

My New - Really Old Bath Faucet

While searching for images of mixed metal finishes in a bathroom (post last week), I came across this brass and copper base Crane faucet on etsy for $75, plus $20 shipping. On impulse ( is there any other way?) I bought it. The seller said it was c 1890 and I absolutely love the styling. The neck is a bit long, 8 inches, but I'll be doing a custom sink vanity so I think it will work. Of course, a day after I bought it, I realize I may end up needing to find some parts to adapt it to new plumbing...I've got my fingers crossed it will all work out. Has anyone had experience using really old faucets? Please tell me it was all good news!

DC's Raji Radhakrishnan at the 2011 Hampton Designer Showhouse

DC's Raji Radhakrishnan has created a very chic and sophisticated Salon des femmes for the 2011 Hampton Designer Showhouse, open now through September 4th. I've always admired Raji's ability to mix modern and traditional furnishings in a way that is seamless, as if the room has evolved over time. Warm brass and gold accents, along with a bit of silver, and a mix of fabrics and textures make for an interesting space that would be a great backdrop for a gathering of girlfriends. Love this oval rug and the way it visually grounds the space.

Looking Up

Thing are looking up. 3 weeks ago I dropped Ryan off at art camp - now he's coming home! He came right out and said he's ready to go to college now. I guess I have a year to get ready.
Today's the last day of July, so sorry to see it go. I wish I could live 12 months of July, it's my absolute favorite month. This July has been particularly wonderful; each day felt like forever, just like when I was a kid.

Can You Mix Metal Finishes in a Bath?

For the new, larger remodeled bathroom in our lower level I'm considering:

Color: BM Mysterious AF-565

Tiles: Using the large white ceramic tiles I already have (8 x 6) for the wet room area which will have a white stand-alone tub and shower.
I"m leaning towards a natural brass for the faucet (color similar to this bracelet) but I'm not sure I want to use brass for the shower and tub fixtures. The wet area will be visible from the vanity.

Can you mix metals in a bathroom?

If so, any advice you would give?

Hole in Floor - Our Renovation Underway!

If you've read my blog awhile you know about my problem room. Built in 1954, our house had a narrow "dining room" that connected the living room to the family room addition (seen in the background of this photo) and the kitchen and den/office. The kitchen is another problem child as it has an awkward L shape. Nothing like opening your dishwasher only to have 5 inches of clearance to get by to the basement stairs.

Well, finally after living here 10 years, it dawned on us that we could relocate the stairs to the basement from the kitchen into the dining room*. (*which we haven't used as a dining room since last year when we made the former den/office the dining room.) Above is the tape marking where the new stairs to the basement will be. You'll head down the stairs from the living room.

The office/tv den (currently functioning as the dining room) was originally a carport.

Here's the new first floor plan showing where the stairs will be. This gives us a larger kitchen that is not L shaped!

- There will be a tall window too to let light into the space and down the stairs.

- The opening to the kitchen will be about 7 ft wide, flanked by built in cabinets on either side. From the front door you won't be able to see the kitchen sink but you will get a view into the far corner of the kitchen/family room area.

- It's also possible during the renovation that we'll expand the kitchen out a bit to the left, into the hall/stair space.

- The wall that is against the dining room will be the cooking area, our counter depth Blomberg fridge will relocate to the right side of the sink, in the corner. I also plan to put my grandmother's small kitchen table, with drop down leaves, in the center of the kitchen.
I love my carpenter! (aka my husband) Here he is, hard at work, starting to remove the floor. I'm not worried since he built our family room addition back in 2004. He might not be worried either, but I'm not sure how happy he is... As he keeps telling me, "I'll be happy when I have it all finished."

New Lower Level - Because of the slope of our lot, our basement is 2/3 above ground. After we renovate that area we'll have:

2 bedrooms

1 bath (expanded from it's current size)

TV/media area

Multi-purpose space with laundry, craft area, storage and wet bar for entertaining

I'll post on that tomorrow as I have to head off to work now. I've been off for 3 weeks so this will be hard!

Trash Chair Meets Pierre Frey

I found this mid-century chair with the vinyl seat cover and cute brass leg detailing put out for trash in my neighborhood.
I painted it Sherwin Williams Dover White but it looked a bit too white. So I mixed Farrow & Ball Bone with glaze and a tiny bit of Dover White and covered the chair. Sorry for the out of focus picture - the glazed side is to the right.
Last year I got this sample of Pierre Frey Les Muses Et Le Lion from a friend. On the site they mentioned it's "finished with a slight calendering to afford it a glossy and elegant appearance." The fabric has a great finish and I think will hold up well on this chair that will serve as a catch-all by the front door.
The only problem is that I wanted the lion (my favorite part!) to be centered. So I cut and sewed the sample to center the lion.
Here it is - finally finished after 2 months of thinking about it. The bureau is only here temporarily as we've starting a remodeling project and had to move some things around. (more on that Monday)
I also love the owl sitting on top of the urn.
I never did do a post on the greek key trim I added to my living room curtains. The trim was found at Haute for $10 a yard at the time.

Magnificent Marblehead

After dropping my son off at camp over a week ago, I headed over to Marblehead for the afternoon. I left seriously doubting why we ever moved from Boston 20+ years ago. The flag says Don't Give Up the Ship. I'd say don't ever give up your property in this idyllic coastal village. Yes, I've spent many hours in the last week searching property listings...

Today - West Elm Georgetown Pop-Up Store Opens!

Yesterday West Elm had a blogger preview unveiling their first ever pop-up store located in Georgetown in DC (3333 M Street NW), slated to be open through the holidays. Enveloped in white, this bright store with a loft feel showcases pieces that push the West Elm brand into new territory. There's definitely a global, collected vibe with artisanal handmade pieces and unique and limited edition offerings. This chair is draped in kantha throws handmade from recycled saris by a women's collective in India.
The bedding collection is a stand-out with organic cotton duvets in price points from $79 - $109. Love these little unique pillows - no two are quite alike. There's also reversible hand-blocked cotton voile quilts and shams that are certified hand-printed and quilted by India's nonprofit Craftmark.

Been coveting a Turkish pestemal style towel? West Elm now has a selection of hand-size ones in a range of colors. I'm thinking this blue one might become a pillow at my house...
There's also fun, little accessories. The ones below remind me of something you'd see in a high end store in London.

Glass vases and votives are made from recycled wine bottles.
This leather Chester armchair was my favorite piece of furniture - there's also a matching sofa. Love the nod to the traditional Chesterfield while simplifying the tufting detailing and squaring off the arms.
During today's opening, Brooklyn based artist Aakash Nihalani, known for his New York City street work in brightly colored electrical tape, will be finishing an installation at the store. I saw just a bit - can't wait to go back and see the whole work! On Saturday 7/16 from 10 am - 12 pm, Pleasant Pops will be handing out frozen pops with some sticks etched with prizes, including one $1,000 West Elm gift card.

I've only shown a bit of what's available. It's exciting to see the new direction West Elm is taking and I know there's a few pieces I plan to go back and get.

My Burning Bush

This bush died twice; the first one and the replacement one from the nursery. For a few years it lived outside like a little grave marker until I finally brought it in and placed it in this concrete pot. It's next to the secretary in my family room. (I've hardly ever posted on this room as it's been in flux. It's finally starting to come together so I'll be showing more soon. Not that you've been waiting.)
At some point I thought this side of the room needed a bit of red too so out came the Safety Red spray paint.
If you don't like it, nobody in my family does either. But here's my question, what should I put around my burning bush? I think moss will only make it look a bit like Christmas - what do you suggest?

Off to Boston

I'm headed to Boston to bring my son, a rising high school senior, to Montserrat Art College for a pre-college summer program. Imagine 3 weeks of making art only a few blocks from the beach. We'll miss him terribly but I think he's going to be in heaven.

This heavenly Beacon Hill window was taken by Deborah of the wonderful blog, Boxwood Terrace. Hands down it's one of my favorite original images from the blogging world in 2010. During this trip I'll also be squeezing in a Sunday afternoon visit to Marblehead, a day trip to Cape Cod to see my parents on Monday, work on Tuesday and then a flight out that night. Busy but then again, how can't you be full of energy when you're in New England in the summer time.

Flambeau Finials

Yesterday I had a very interesting day, most of it spent gardening, which felt more like toiling in the dirt versus gardening amongst the blooms. Whenever I got hot or cranky (mostly cranky), I'd head in to read the most fascinating blog on gardening - Deborah Silver's Dirt Simple. (Deborah is the owner of Detroit Garden Works.)

I'm only just discovering it, so there's years of posts to read. That's where I came across this pair of flambeau garden finials (here) from an old Sotheby's catalog she had. Deborah noted that flambeau is flame or torch in French. Aren't these amazing?
Here's a tole flambeau finial from Linda Horn via 1st dibs
and custom carved wood flambeau finials with acanthus detailing from Edward Harpley, an English firm. Beautiful as well.

But besides the garden finials, this may be my favorite flambeau - a silver table lighter. It was up for auction in 2003 but didn't meet the minimum. I wonder what that was and where this piece is now? (via icollector here)

Entry Drama & a book recommendation

This stunning black and white entry is from the Hampton home of 1st dibs founder Michael Bruno. The coffered walls are painted a high gloss black and the steps alternate between white and black. To me, the styling of the demilune table is perfection.

This image is from a Benjamin Moore book, Interior Style: How to Use Color Throughout Your Home. Published back in 2004, it is full (and I mean full) of great eye candy. I also love how they take a color and then show you 7 variations/types of that color along with corresponding BM paint colors. The soft, laminated cover makes it perfect for beach reading!

Topless Americana

Sometimes you see things you'd only see here in America. These teenage boys have solved the problem of wanting a convertible car without have the funds to procure one. They just cut off the top of a regular car and added in a new windshield ( a very low one at that). Oh, and a back bumper made of wood.

Stores in Atlanta - new to me

Luckily when I'm on business travel my day ends at 4 pm, giving me just enough time to fit in a design store or two before they close. This trip instead of going to my usual places, I visited 3 stores I'd never been to before. First up was a visit to Anthony|Wolfe in Buckhead. Love the wide fabric stripe on these upholstered chairs and the pairing of this warm, deep yellow with the earthy gray.
No, this is not an amazing giant door knocker but actually a disability grip bar! I wish I had taken a picture of the whole door because that would have given a better sense of how amazing this looked.

At Scout For The Home I really admired the curvy shape and narrow depth of these bedside tables. Isn't the finish nice too?
These paintings are by a local artist who uses coffee to create her works.

In my last post w/the picture of the amazing periwinkle nunnery doors, I mentioned Sherry of Design Indulgence gave me a heads up about Redefined in West Midtown, which is perfect as it's right on the way to the airport. The finish and look of this black screen is very classic.

Like many bookstores that feature "picks" from their staff, Redefined does the same with home decor. This great wood piece was a favorite of Tracy's.
Love this Derby winner but what really drew me in was scale and dimensions of this narrow console table.

I'll be back in Atlanta in August and should be able to spend a few hours at Scott's before flying home. Looking forward to that.

Post Prom

This is where most of the rental tuxedo ended up after the prom, taken off as soon as possible, right by the front door. Ryan's only a junior but attended the Senior Prom because he's class president next year. I'm currently in denial that he is home for only one more year.

The chair was found on the side of the road a few months ago. This weekend I'll be repainting it and adding fabric to the seat. Underneath the tux it's green vinyl!

You may remember the paintings above. These two were purchased from Margaret Bostick of The Silk Purse, Inc. (to-the-trade 404.431.5422 and at Atlanta's Scott Antique Market) Originally from a set of 11 by an amatuer painter in Ghent, they're finally framed and Im really enjoying them.

Patience has never been my strong suit. We have a huge patch of transplanted black raspberry bushes (not to be confused with blackberries) from upstate New York and I know I should wait until they're truly ripe before picking them. As my husband reminded me, I shouldn't pick the berry the very first day it turns black. Better to wait a bit...but, you know I popped this one into my mouth right after the click of the camera.
